Photographs, chains, 2018

Justyna references traditional headdresses from Bulgarian culture with her self portraits as a way to connect with her ancestry. Being from Australia, Justyna feels disconnected with her roots due to isolation and being in Bulgaria for the first time has brought thoughts and reflections on identity.

Performance, sound, resin, chain, blue tape, 2018

Having a physical restriction caused by a knee injury, Justyna Stanczew wraps herself with chains and a resin knee cast to represent a bodily limitation she endures on a daily basis. The physical struggle forces her to consciously use her body, the movements are predetermined as a way to minimise further implications. Wrapping and unwrapping and then going backwards, the cycle always continues.
